Jesus is our Savior, Redeemer, and Friend. We call Him by His first name. He is the friend that is closer than a brother. Had we been alive when He walked this earth, we’d like to think of ourselves as being with Him, close to Him, walking and working alongside Him. However, we must never forget His holiness, His otherliness as God.
In Exodus, we are reading about the work that went into the development and construction of the tabernacle. The tabernacle was an elaborate tent-based facility which was loaded in symbolism for the purpose of both drawing people near to God, and reminding them of the Holiness of God. The closest people could get to God, in those days, was to stand within the curtains of the tents.
In John 15 and 16, Jesus tells us that we can dwell with Him. He tells us that now – because of His sacrifice for us – we can be with Him today and for eternity. The powerful Holiness that could not be approached in the Old Testament is now available to us, with us, and in us in the New Testament. Be thankful for His incredible plan and his incredible grace for us! As Paul tells us in the letter to the Colossians, we ought to overflow with thanksgiving!
